Look! Booking Through Thursday is talking about Buy A Friend A Book, too:
Buy a Friend a Book Week is October 1-7 (as well as the first weeks of January, April, and July). During this week, you’re encouraged to buy a friend a book for no good reason. Not for their birthday, not because it’s a holiday, not to cheer them up–just because it’s a book.
What book would you choose to give to a friend and why?
Well, my answer to this question varies according to who the recipient is.
One book I’d like to give to a lot of people, though, is Wreck This Journal by Keri Smith.
It’s not so much a book you read as a book you do. It’s a journal and yes - you wreck it. You wreck it in all kinds of creative ways. It’s great for those of us who have felt that fear ‘messing up’ a fresh, new journal or sketch book.

For others, I’d happily introduce them to the first book in the Owly series of graphic novels. I first learned about these books when a friend gave me a copy of The Way Home & The Bittersweet Summer. I think I’ve talked about these books here before. They’re lovely tales that convey humor, friendship, melancholy, and just great stories - all without words. Very touching and very good.
There are so many great books I’d like to share with friends, but these are two good ones to start with. What about you?

Next week is Buy A Friend A Book Week! This bookish occasion happens quarterly and it’s a great time to surprise somebody with a delightful text.
You may remember last time we had a contest here at Treehouse Jukebox that resulted in one happy winner.
Will I get it together enough to do a contest next week???
Stay tuned to find out!

I believe in all that has never yet been spoken.
I want to free what waits within me
so that what no one has dared to wish for
may for once spring clear
without my contriving.
If this is arrogant, forgive me,
but this is what I need to say.
May what I do flow from me like a river,
no forcing and no holding back,
the way it is with children.
Then in these swelling and ebbing currents,
these deepening tides moving out, returning,
I will sing you as no one ever has,
streaming through widening channels
into the open sea.

Our local Global Mala event was simple and lovely.
I surprised myself and yoga surprised me - again. I did 54 sun salutations and 108 OMs, feeling good. It wasn’t a strain, it was just good. Since I am still new to yoga, this was much more than I thought I’d be able to do!
We gathered to focus on peace and we pooled money to feed people in need right in our community.
It was a great experience! I’d like to do this every week.
Did you participate in a Global Mala event? I’d love to hear about it.

We have not come here to take prisoners,
But to surrender ever more deeply
To freedom and joy.
We have not come into this exquisite world
To hold ourselves hostage from love.
Run my dear,
From anything
That may not strengthen
Your precious budding wings.
Run like hell my dear,
From anyone likely
To put a sharp knife
Into the sacred, tender vision
Of your beautiful heart.
We have a duty to befriend
Those aspects of obedience
That stand outside of our house
And shout to our reason
“O please, O please,
Come out and play.”
For we have not come here to take prisoners
Or to confine our wondrous spirits,
But to experience ever and ever more deeply
Our divine courage, freedom and
Light!

OK…let’s face it. As much as I enjoy reading good book reviews and enjoy books…I hate writing book reviews!! But I do like sharing books I’ve read. So, I’ve decided to do little book spotlights, Picture Book Monday-style.

The Wood Wife
by Terri Windling
Why I liked: This is one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. It was beautifully written. The story is partially about poetry and it’s also very poetic. It involves magic, the allure and wildness of nature, art, myth, mystery, romance…lots of good stuff. Highly recommended!
Tiny Excerpt:
The hills call in a tongue
I cannot speak, a constant murmuring,
calling the rain from my dry bones,
and syllables from the marrow.
(from a book within the book)
Bonus Bits: Terri Windling has a site here and she is the Director of Endicott Studio, which has a wonderful Journal and blog.

I saw a little change purse like this for sale today. This is a baby-sock-sized-sock, so the whole thing is tiny and adorable. I think I need to make one of these for myself!
I wonder how those snappy-closing-things attach to fabric…
