Just a good thing.

How excited are you about the new Get Fuzzy book coming out on Saturday?

I'm Ready for My Movie Contract: A Get Fuzzy Collection

A. Excited

B. Super-Excited

C. WOOHOO-SO-EXCITED

I’m sure you’re one of those, right? Well, I’m quite excited. I love Get Fuzzy and since I don’t see the comics anymore, these strips will be all new to me. You can’t beat that.

Some Book Mentions

The random book I won arrived today. It turns out to be…

Tangerine

Tangerine by Edward Bloor and with an introduction (bizarrely) by Danny De Vito. I probably would never have picked this book up, but now that I have it I guess I’ll give it a whirl!

And right now I am reading Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr. It’s a fairly creepy book about humans as fae.

Don’t go back to sleep.

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.

Don’t go back to sleep.

You must ask for what you really want.

Don’t go back to sleep.

People are going back and forth across the doorsill

where the two worlds touch.

The door is round and open.

Don’t go back to sleep.

Contest Coming

We’re going to have a contest here during the month of September. Woohoo!

In the meantime, I’d better post some actual content, right? :)

I’ve been a bit quiet and stressed, but I still love you, blog.

I’ve won…something…

It’s been a difficult week for me. But I just won a book!

The funny thing is - I have no idea what the book is, but I won it.

I’ll post about it when it arrives.

PBM: Grandfather Twilight

What’s “PBM,” you ask? It’s Picture Book Monday!

On PBMs, I shortly and sweetly highlight a picture book. For instance:

Grandfather Twilight
written and illustrated by Barbara Helen Berger

Why Read It: This book has a very peaceful feel about it in both text and illustrations. There are very few words, but the story is clear. I think this book will give you a sense of quiet.

Themes: Twilight, nature, and bedtime.

Bonus Bits: Barbara Helen Berger talks about where she gets her ideas.

Things to Love

Lovely Handmade Toys to Peruse:

Albert the Badger

Felt Italian Dinner (I want to make some ravioli like this right now!)

Lockbox

Handmade Wooden Dice (These are just beautiful. They’re not perfectly weighted, but for casual gaming that’s just fine.)

Music for All

My mind has been on a lot of music-related things lately (amongst other topics!) and I’ve been thinking about ways live music can be brought to people who rarely have access to it. Specifically, I am thinking of people living in homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, etc.

Last night, I happened across some information about Music Kitchen, a program that hosts professional musicians at a couple shelters in New York City.

I’m pondering this idea. As far as I know, no one is doing this in my area and I wonder if a program could be started up.

My beginning idea is one concert per month, rotating around different shelters, etc. in the area. I don’t think the musicians  needs to be professional musicians - just people who love to play or sing music skillfully.

Of course, it could grow to more frequent events, but once a month seems like an ambitious but doable starting place.

Music has psychological, emotional, and physical healing abilities. It’s also just fun and entertaining! It can be soothing or energizing. Live music can create an especially powerful experience. And it should be available to be enjoyed by all!

Do you know of any other programs like this? I’d love to check out what others are doing. Also, please share any ideas you have. I’m going to talk to some people and see where this goes.

I’ll edit and add similiar programs as I find them:
